Computer Center

There is a Computer Centre in the Academic Building with AIX based IBM RISC 6000 server, Novell Netware 5.1 based server, Windows 2000 based server, Linux based mail server, Proxy Server and DNS Server and SCO Unix based ZENITH server. The Centre has more than 140 microcomputers of various types, IBM  and IBM PC compatibles. A campus wide network with Novell Netware 5.1 and Unix Ware 2 has been installed connecting the computers in the Centre and other computers in various departments, library and offices of the University. On-line internet facility is also available for students, staff and teachers. The Computer Centre provides extensive internet facility to all students and staff of the University. Campus wide Optical Fiber Network Backbone has been set up partly to facilitate high-speed network and internet services to the users. After successful installment of broadband line from BTCL using dedicated connection of 10 Mbps uplink and 10 Mbps downlink, students and staff of IUT are being able to surf the Internet smoothly with greater speed.  New students should contact the Computer Centre for their e-mail, internet and Novell account and registration. There is also a Multimedia Laboratory.

All students are trained, as a part of their curricula, in computer applications. Students who specialise in Computer Science and Information Technology are extensively trained in hardware and software of the computer. All students are also required to register their names by filling out a prescribed form, available at the Computer Centre, before they are allowed to use the microcomputers. They can use the network and free e-mail facilities after getting the ID from the authorities. Since computers are sophisticated and costly equipment, students are advised not to mishandle these to meet their curiosities. One should always take the help of a teacher or laboratory personnel who knows the operation of the equipment better.

Printouts from Computer Centre are restricted by a decision of the Administrative Advisory Committee. However, students will be allowed printouts in connection with course works on the written recommendation of the teacher concerned.  For other works written recommendation of the Head of the Department concerned will be required. There is a prescribed form available at the Computer Centre for obtaining these recommendations.
