Department of TVE

The Department of Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) is the oldest department of the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) with an annual intake of 60 students fully funded by the OIC. Since the very beginning of IUT as Islamic Center for Technical and Vocational Training and Research (ICTVTR) in 1981, the TVE department serves as a nucleus of the university and makes a significant contribution in human resource development among the OIC Member States, particularly in technical and vocational education, and teachers’ professional development. It has started Masters program in 1986 and already celebrated 30 years of its commencement in 2016. At its inception, the department was known as Instructor Training and General Studies (ITS) and afterwards from the academic year 2010-11 it has been renamed as TVE.

The TVE department offers a diverse range of academic and professional development programs and training, which include Certificates (will be resumed from academic year 2017-18), Diploma, Bachelors, Post Graduate Diploma and Masters in the field of Technical Education, Vocational Education and Teachers’ Training. The department regularly organizes industrial/ institutional engagement programs, seminars, workshops, and conferences to give opportunity to the students to be familiar with recent development of knowledge and practices in teaching-learning, curriculum development, ICTs and pedagogical innovations. In addition to the professional courses, it offers general courses in Languages, Islamiat, Islamic history, Science and Culture to all fresh entrants of the university. The course curricula are under constant scrutiny and review and continuously updated to meet the current needs and requirements of the OIC countries as well as to comply with the international standard. Currently the department has 06 full-time qualified and dedicated faculty members along with several part-time faculty members from other reputed universities. There are about 80 undergraduate and 20 post graduate students in the department. The competency of the department is evident from the achievement of its alumni, who have created a unique entity both in job sector and academia in different parts of the world.

Certificate and Diploma Programmes

  • Certificate in Vocational Education (CVE): 3/6/12 Months
  • Diploma in Technical Education (DTE): 1-Year
Description of Programs

The Certificate in Vocational Education (CVE) is a highly skill oriented non-formal program offered by the TVE department of IUT. Its objective is to produce qualified mediocre technicians in different trades as per need of the OIC Member States. This program equips interested individuals with specialized skills in a wide range of trades including but not limited to Computer Fundamentals, Web Design and E-commerce, Graphics and Animation, Video Editing, Digital Marketing, Desktop and Mobile Apps Development, AutoCAD (2D-3D), Drafting, Industrial Automation and Mechatronics, Embedded Electronic Systems, Electrical Machine and Motion Technology, Artificial Incubation and Farm Automation, Instrumentation and Control, Automobile, and Machine Technology. Based on the level of education and prospects in the competitive job market, CVE program is shaped into different durations ranging from 3 to 12 months. Minimum entry requirement of this program is the completion of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) or equivalent educational qualifications. The CVE program in different engineering and trades is expected to resume in the academic year 2016-17.

The Diploma in Technical Education (DTE) is an entry level teacher education program to cater to the needs of professionally trained teachers and other educational personnel in the field of technical and vocational education in the OIC countries. Duration of the program is one year comprising two consecutive semesters. Total 42.50 credit hours are awarded to the students for graduation, and this includes the specified core pedagogical courses with several technical/engineering courses from their respective specialization in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Computer Science and Engineering. Minimum entry requirement of this program is the completion of Diploma in Engineering or equivalent educational qualifications. Applicants with teaching experience in technical and vocational education or in any relevant areas are given preference in admission to this program.

Undergraduate Programmes

  • Bachelor of Science in Technical Education (BScTE) [Diploma stream]: 2-Years
  • Bachelor of Science in Technical Education (BScTE) [Higher Diploma stream]: 1-Year
Description of Programs

The Bachelor of Science in Technical Education (BScTE) is a 2-years program for diploma stream consisting of four consecutive semesters of sixteen weeks duration each. Its objective is to produce qualified teachers with sound pedagogical knowledge as well as specialized technical /engineering subject matter expertise as per need of the OIC countries. Total 97.00 credit hours are awarded to the students for graduation, and this includes the specified core pedagogical courses with several technical/engineering courses from their respective specialization in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Computer Science and Engineering. Students must undertake a research project in their final year of study as partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree from their respective specialization. Minimum entry requirement of this program is the completion of Diploma in Technical Education or equivalent educational qualifications. Teachers of technical and vocational education or in any relevant areas are given preference in admission to this program.

The BScTE (HD stream) is a 1-year program offered to the students having Higher Diploma or equivalent educational qualifications in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Computer Science and Engineering. Total 49.00 credit hours are awarded to the students for graduation, and this includes the specified core pedagogical courses with several technical/engineering courses from their respective specialization. Students must undertake a research project in their final year of study as partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree from their respective specialization. This program is basically designed for the international students coming from different OIC countries and will be discontinued from the academic year 2020-21 with alternative arrangements.

Graduate Programmes

  • Master of Science in Technical Education (MScTE): 2-Years
Description of Programs

Since 1986 the TVE department of IUT started a 2-years Master of Science in Technical Education program in order to develop competencies for improvement in teaching-learning, knowledge of appropriate methods and techniques along with innovative teaching aids and course materials, understanding measurement and evaluation procedures, skill in evaluating the outcomes of technical education and conducting educational research in relevant fields. The students further upgrade their technical knowledge in a chosen division of engineering as available at IUT. To keep abreast of the latest technological developments and their application in education, the department strides towards implementing blended, online and digital learning through IUTOnline and MOOCs platform from next academic year initially for its postgraduate programs.

The MScTE is a comprehensive Masters program of two years consisting of four consecutive semesters for full-time students. It requires completion of 60 credits of coursework from both pedagogical and technical areas. In addition to the required coursework, the program includes a total of 18 credits of thesis work under the supervision of a faculty member. Minimum entry requirement of this program is the completion of Bachelor of Science in Technical Education or equivalent educational qualifications. Teachers of technical and vocational education or in any relevant areas having substantial experience are given preference in admission to this program. The curriculum of postgraduate program is regularly updated through Post Graduate Committee (PGC), Committee for Advanced Studies and Research (CASR)/ Academic Council (AC).

For further enhancement of research activities in the department, PhD program will be started in the near future.
