Academic Regulations

The Regulations related to academic matters including admission and examination are given in the booklet “ACADEMIC REGULATIONS”. However, some important regulations are quoted below.


1.Attendance

(a)To be eligible for admission to the Semester Final Examination, students must attend at least 85% of the total number of periods of Lectures/Tutorials/ Laboratories/ Workshops/Field work in every subject offered during the Semester.

  1. In special circumstances, the Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of the Head of the Department, may condone 10% of the required attendance on grounds of serious illness of the student on production of certificate by a Registered Physician or reasons acceptable to the University.
  2. If any student fails to pass in any sessional / practical subject, he will not be allowed to sit for any examination of theoretical subjects.  

2.Grades

(a)A student will be declared to have passed the Semester Examination when he passes in all the subjects of the Semester having minimum CGPA of 2.00 for  Higher Diploma in Engineering, Diploma in Technical Education, Bachelor of Science in Technical Education, Bachelor of Science  in Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Information Technology,  and CGPA of 2.50 for Post-Graduate Diploma in Technical Education and Master of Science in Technical Education. Details for Postgraduate Programmes in Engineering and Technology can be found in the publication “RULES AND REGULATIONS – POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY” which can be obtained from the respective department.  With effect from the Academic Year 2006-2007, the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for the newly admitted students only of all programmes will be calculated in the scale of 4.00. The system will remain unchanged for students of senior years.


(b)A student who has passed in all the subjects but failed to obtain the required minimum CGPA in the odd semester may be placed on probation and allowed to continue his studies in the next semester; but at the end of the even semester he shall have to maintain a cumulative CGPA of required minimum value.

(c)A student failing in three or more theoretical subjects/referred subjects will be provisionally allowed to attend classes in the next higher semester with maximum of four theoretical subjects having no pre-requisite subject which will be decided by the Head of the Department after application by the student within one week following the publication of the referred examination results. The student who failed to pass any semester must apply in writing within one week of the starting of the next semester and take written permission for continuing the next semester provisionally. For this case, B.Sc. Engg. and B.Sc. CIT students will have to pay the required fees at the time of readmission. Regarding the above rules, the students can get advice from his advisor, departmental teachers, Registrar and Head of the Department.
Each student is responsible to ascertain his status and act accordingly as required by rules.

3.Referred Examination


A student failing in not more than two theoretical subjects may be allowed to sit for an Examination called Referred Examination on the subject or subjects to be held normally within two weeks from the commencement of next semester. If anybody fails in any referred subject he fails that semester. The maximum grade in referred exam is B. If the mark obtained is below 50% but equal or more than 45%, the grade will be D.  If it is equal or more than 50% but below 60% that grade will be C.

4.CANCELLATION OF STUDENTSHIP DUE TO FAILURE


A student shall not be re-admitted if he fails to pass the Semester Examinations of each academic year in two consecutive academic years. In this case he loses his studentship automatically and must leave the University.

5.Registration of CONTINUING Students


All continuing students will register at the Registrar's Office at the beginning of the Academic Session by filling a prescribed form available from the Office of the Registrar.

6.Absence during the session


In exceptional circumstances students who are required to go home and leave the host country during the session will have to apply to the Registrar stating reasons through the respective Head of the Department and the Provost and take a clearance from the Registrar, and has to report to the Registrar after their return to the University. But the attendance clause is not relaxed in this case. The student is responsible to maintain the minimum attendance.

7.Withdrawal


Due to medical reasons and on the recommendation of the Physician a student can withdraw from the session for one year and can rejoin after full recovery by submitting the certificate of fitness from the doctor who treated him.

8.TRANSCRIPT

Students completing a programme successfully will be provided a transcript on payment of fees as notified by the office of the Registrar and as per procedure of the office of the Registrar. If there is any dues or fines to be paid the student must clear them before he is provided with the transcript.
