Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE)
Department of CEE has started its journey with undergraduate program in 2008 with the aim of development of highly qualified civil and environmental engineers who will help to improve the quality of life, meet the needs of industry and government, and contribute to the economic competitiveness locally and internationally. The CEE strives to attain a level of research and scholarly productivity befitting a major research university and warranting national and international recognition for excellence. Since its establishment the department is focusing on continuous improvement of quality of education through development of highly qualified faculties and staffs; development of laboratory facilities for research works; getting best quality students at the intake; continuous monitoring and evaluation of the students, encouraging students to participate in the extra-curricular activities; getting feedback regarding alumni’s from the employer; continuous up gradation of syllabus; collaboration with industries and universities; accreditation of the programs by local and international boards/authorities, etc.
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) of Islamic University of Technology (IUT) has started Master’s program in 2012. The program has been started to enhance research activities of the department and finally to make contribution in solving problems of different civil engineering fields. Currently the department has 17 full-time faculty members along with some part-time faculty members from other reputed universities. There are about 220 undergraduate and 50 graduate students in the department.
In addition to the theoretical and sessional courses, the department regularly organizes industrial visits for the students. Also, seminars, workshops, and conferences are organized regularly in the department to give opportunity to the students to be familiar with recent development of knowledge in the field of civil engineering. It also helps the students to understand the necessity of continuous learning for serving the society effectively.
Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (B. Sc. in CE) degree offered by Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Islamic University of Technology provides you with a foundation in basic sciences and specific civil engineering skills. The first year and the second year syllabus cover fundamental courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and structures. In the third and fourth years, the curriculum largely consists of civil engineering courses in various sub-disciplines including Structure, Transportation, Environmental, Geotechnical and Water Resource engineering. Laboratory classes in the field of civil engineering are carried out in the third and fourth years. In final year, students will work in groups on a thesis project. A number of technical elective courses in the last two years allow the students to take additional courses in a preferred area of civil engineering. In this program, students will take courses and complete lab work in topics such as soil mechanics and foundation design, design of steel structure, design of concrete structures, as well as roads and infrastructure design, environmental modeling, etc.
Program Educational Objectives:
Graduates of the undergraduate program in Civil Engineering are expected to attain the following objectives within a few years from the date of graduation:
- Civil Engineering graduates will have in depth knowledge in both practical and theoretical approaches to engineering design, problem solving, and apply the concept of sustainable development where effects of economics, humanities, and social sciences are considered holistically.
- Civil Engineering graduates will have adequate background to pursue advanced engineering studies and seek opportunities for life-long learning and innovative research.
- Possessing outstanding leadership abilities, effective communication and entrepreneurship skills as well as being creative and innovative in planning, design and management of Civil Engineering projects.
- Civil Engineering graduates will maintain ethical standards in practice with a positive attitude towards working in multi-cultural settings.
The curriculum of the program covers courses from different areas, such as general science and mathematics, arts and humanities, basic engineering and elective engineering courses from different branches of civil engineering - structural engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering. Elective courses in the different branches of civil engineering are taught in third and fourth years to enhance/widen the depth of knowledge in particular subjects. The total number of credit hours of the program is 181.0, including 139 credit hours from theory courses, and 42 credit hours from sessional courses. The curriculum of the program is revised regularly based on the feedback from the students, employer, faculties, and other stakeholders. The fourth revision of the syllabus of B. Sc. in Civil Engineering program has been made in October 2015.

Description of Programs
The department has started a two-year Master of Science in Civil Engineering program in 2012 to enhance capability of research works in the department. The department also offers Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering (M. Engg. in CE). Currently, the total number of master students is 75. For further enhancement of research activities in the department, PhD program will be started in the near future.
The M. Engg. program is a non-thesis, course-based program for two years for full-time students. The program requires completion of at least 30 credits of coursework. In addition to the 30 credits of required coursework, students are required to complete a project of 6 credits for the fulfillment of the degree requirements.
The thesis-based M. Sc. is a research-based program for two years for full-time students. The program includes a total of 18 credits of coursework and 18 credits of thesis work under the supervision of a faculty member. The curriculum of postgraduate program is regularly updated through Post Graduate Committee (PGC), Committee for Advanced Studies and Research (CASR)/Academic Council (AC).
